Evaluating the Tourism Services at Tell El -Amarna Site in El-Menya Governorate as a Competitive Destination

Abstract

El-Menya Governorate is one of 27 governorates of Egypt. It is the capital of the northern region, which includes Menya, Fayoum, and Beni Suef. There are many touristic attractions in El-Menya governorate, dating back to different historical eras; whether ancient Egyptian monuments such as the Middle Kingdom tombs and temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Beni Hassan, Tell El-Amarna tombs and temples of the New Kingdom, El Ashmunein and its cemetery Tuna El Gabal of the Greco-Roman era, as well as the Coptic religious monuments such as Bahnasa, Monastery of the Virgin Mary, archeological churches and monasteries. The archaeological site of Tell El-Amarna is located about 60 km southeast of El-Menya city, where the most important monuments of the region, remnants of the Northern Palace, the temple of Aton the Great, the Southern Palace, the tomb of Huya, tomb of Mryra, as well as the royal tomb of Akhenaten. This paper sheds light on evaluating the tourism services applied to tourists at the site Tell El-Amarna in El-Menya.Data collection involved in-depth, semi-structured interviews with government officials and experts at the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. A questionnaire was directed to a sample of tourists visiting the site of Tell El-Amarna, another questionnaire was distributed to travel agencies type (A) in Cairo. In addition to a personal observation checklist was conducted to evaluate the services and facilities provided to tourists at Tell El-Amarna. The paper recommends that El-Menya governorate in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities should increase awareness among the local community nearby the tourist and archaeological sites in order to collaborate easily with tourists visiting the site of Tell El-Amarna, where the information about tourism development at the area should be provided through media, workshops, as well as websites.
