اEgypt as a pet friendly destination: A constraint analysis of pet’s owners in Egypt

Abstract

Pet friendly tourism is a rising industry and the number of pet travelers is increasing annually, the aim of this paper is to examine the factors that affect pet owners’ decisions when taking pets to participate in tourism activities, pet owners must consider their own circumstances as well as the constraints their pets place on them and to explore the current state of pet friendly tourism in Egypt and also to examine what the main considerations were for hospitality operators in Egypt with regards to offering pet-friendly services.

This explorative research interviewed 2 focus group tourism: first group was pet’s owners, second group was 20 accommodation providers in Egypt , 10 Pet’s friendly and 10 Non- Pet’s friendly these operators represented owners or managers of hotels, motels, lodges spread across Cairo, sharm el sheikh and Hurgada. The findings show that Egypt’s Pet tourism market is in its infancy, both in terms of supply and demand. There are pet tourists desiring to travel with pets but pet-associated constraints are negatively affecting owners’ motivation and behavior also there are limitations related to extra costs, lack of information and unsuitable destinations.
